A lot of developers are still acting like it\u2019s 2015: pick a language, grind syntax, and try to stand out as \u201ca React dev\u201d or \u201ca Python dev.\u201d That thinking will cost you time, and worse, it will cap your career.<\/p>\n
Software development is no longer centered on writing code.<\/strong> It hasn\u2019t been for a while, but now the shift is impossible to ignore. Code is becoming a smaller slice of the job, and if that\u2019s all you focus on, you\u2019re building on shrinking ground.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve said this for decades: coding should be the last step, not the first. The real work is everything around it\u2014how the system is structured, how data flows, how components interact, and how the business logic holds together.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s what I\u2019m seeing more and more: developers use AI to generate an app, it works great at first, and they fly through the early stages. Then they hit a wall around 70\u201380% completion.<\/p>\n Suddenly things break. Fixes create new bugs. The code becomes hard to reason about. Progress slows to a crawl.<\/p>\n This isn\u2019t an AI problem. It\u2019s a structure problem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If you don\u2019t understand separation of concerns, component design, and basic architecture, AI will happily generate a pile of spaghetti faster than you ever could manually. And then you\u2019re stuck maintaining it.<\/p>\n The developers who stand out now aren\u2019t the ones who generate the most code. They\u2019re the ones who can control and shape what AI produces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The question companies are asking has changed. It\u2019s no longer \u201cwhat language do you know?\u201d It\u2019s closer to:<\/p>\n That\u2019s a very different skill set. It\u2019s closer to engineering than coding.<\/p>\n You still need to learn programming. Don\u2019t get that twisted. But you don\u2019t learn it to memorize syntax\u2014you learn it so you can read code, judge quality, and make decisions.<\/p>\n Tools will keep changing. They always do. I\u2019ve seen entire ecosystems rise and disappear.
