A lot of developers are doubling down on learning more syntax, more languages, more tricks, thinking that\u2019s the safe path forward. It isn\u2019t. If your plan for 2026 is \u201cI\u2019ll just get better at coding,\u201d you\u2019re aiming at the wrong target.<\/p>\n
Coding still matters<\/strong>, but its importance has been shrinking for decades. The industry doesn\u2019t reward people who write the most code. It rewards people who solve problems with the least amount of code<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If you\u2019ve been around long enough, you\u2019ve seen this pattern repeat. We moved from low-level programming to higher-level languages, then to frameworks, then to full ecosystems. Each step removed friction and reduced the amount of code developers had to write.<\/p>\n Older developers complained at every stage. \u201cYou\u2019re losing control.\u201d Maybe. But what actually happened? We built bigger systems, faster, with smaller teams.<\/p>\n Frameworks like Laravel, Django, and React didn\u2019t make developers obsolete. They made them more capable<\/strong>. The same thing is happening again now.<\/p>\n AI isn\u2019t some magical replacement for developers. It\u2019s another abstraction layer. The mistake people make is asking, \u201cWill AI take my job?\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s the wrong question.<\/p>\n The better question is: What can I build now that I couldn\u2019t build before?<\/strong><\/p>\n This is where things get interesting, especially for freelancers and small teams. There are countless small business ideas that were never built because they weren\u2019t worth the cost. Now they are.<\/p>\n Internal tools, booking systems, niche apps\u2014these projects are suddenly viable. Not because coding got easier, but because the total effort required dropped<\/strong>.<\/p>\n One of the worst instincts you can have as a developer is the urge to write everything yourself. That instinct will slow you down and make you less valuable.<\/p>\n You want to move in the opposite direction:<\/p>\n Your value is not in typing code.<\/strong> It\u2019s in deciding what should be built, how it fits together, and how to keep it maintainable.<\/p>\n Back in the late 90s, I rebuilt a large web application from scratch using a newer stack. The original took over a year. I redid it in about 30 days while learning as I went.<\/p>\n That wasn\u2019t because I became a better coder overnight. It was because I used a higher level of abstraction.<\/p>\n Did that reduce jobs?
