There\u2019s this idea floating around that developers will make a living cleaning up messy AI-generated code. That\u2019s not how this plays out in the real world.<\/p>\n
When code is poorly structured from the start, it doesn\u2019t gradually improve with careful tweaking. It collapses under its own weight. At some point, fixing it becomes slower and more painful than rewriting it entirely.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve seen this long before AI. Years ago, I was brought in to salvage a social network built with Perl CGI. The codebase was such a mess that debugging anything caused three new problems. The only viable solution was to scrap it and rebuild properly.<\/p>\n
Bad structure doesn\u2019t age well. It compounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n Here\u2019s what happens with uncontrolled AI coding. At first, everything feels fast. You\u2019re generating features, wiring things together, making visible progress. It looks like a win.<\/p>\n Then you hit what I call the 80% wall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n That\u2019s when small changes start breaking unrelated parts of the system. You fix one issue, another pops up. You patch that, and something else fails. Progress slows to a crawl, and eventually stops.<\/p>\n This isn\u2019t an AI problem. It\u2019s a software design problem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n AI just helps you dig the hole faster.<\/p>\n Companies aren\u2019t going to hire armies of developers to polish broken codebases. They\u2019ll rewrite them, or replace them entirely.<\/p>\n The real value is in developers who know how to use AI within a proper development process<\/strong>. That means you understand architecture, state, APIs, and how systems fit together.<\/p>\n When you have that foundation, AI becomes a force multiplier. You can realistically increase output several times over without sacrificing quality.<\/p>\n Without that foundation, you\u2019re just generating chaos at high speed.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve watched this cycle repeat for decades. Perl, ASP, frameworks, libraries\u2014they come and go. Each time, people rush in without understanding the fundamentals, and they pay for it later.<\/p>\n The developers who do well are the ones who focus on the underlying principles:<\/p>\nThe 80% wall that traps developers<\/h4>\n
