When people hear that Airbnb is generating 60% of its code with AI, they jump to the wrong conclusion: \u201ccoding is dying.\u201d That\u2019s not what\u2019s happening. What\u2019s actually happening is that low-level coding is being automated<\/strong>, while judgment and design become more valuable.<\/p>\n If you misunderstand that shift, you risk spending years going down the wrong path\u2014either avoiding AI entirely or relying on it blindly. Both approaches lead to the same place: limited growth and fragile skills.<\/p>\n AI can generate huge amounts of code quickly, but it doesn\u2019t understand what it\u2019s building. It predicts patterns. That\u2019s it. There\u2019s no real reasoning behind the output.<\/p>\n So yes, small teams can now produce what used to take 20 developers. But those teams still need people who can:<\/p>\n That layer of thinking hasn\u2019t gone anywhere.<\/strong> In fact, it\u2019s now the bottleneck.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve seen this pattern already. Developers using AI without solid fundamentals hit what I call the \u201c80% wall.\u201d They get something working quickly, it looks impressive, and then everything starts breaking down.<\/p>\n Why? Because the foundation is weak. No structure. No separation of concerns. No real system design.<\/p>\n At that point, AI can\u2019t save you. It will happily generate more bad code on top of your bad code.<\/p>\n Developers who understand software don\u2019t have this problem. They use AI to handle the tedious work, while they control the structure and direction.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve seen this before. When new tools show up, they replace certain tasks, not entire professions.<\/p>\n Boilerplate code? That\u2019s going away. Basic CRUD work? Less valuable now.<\/p>\n But the ability to design systems, structure applications, and make good technical decisions? That\u2019s still rare. And now it\u2019s more valuable because AI amplifies it.<\/p>\n Good developers become much faster.
